The clients are a young family who was looking for a classic kitchen design in Darien, CT. They purchased a home with the intent to add an addition, which would include a brand new kitchen.
The existing layout provided little storage and no functional work areas. There was a column that interrupted the flow, and there was no space for an island. There was little light in the room. The back door into the home came directly into the kitchen, but there was no room for a mud area.
After our initial consultation, we created a set of priorities and goals with the clients. Functionally, the primary goal was to improve the workflows in the space, with entertaining as their main priority. Second, they wanted to expand and integrate the seating more efficiently into the space. Last, they wanted a mud area to allow each member to have some storage for their coats and belongings.
Aesthetically, they wanted to add more light to the space but also wanted a large refrigerator and custom cabinet hood.
East Hill created a design to use the space most efficiently. First, we moved the sink to the island. This change allowed them to face their guests and they were preparing meals.
Second, we added a closet and bench right next to the door. This is where they hang their coats, and their children leave their backpacks and sporting equipment.
Third, we added windows to either side of the cabinet hood, allowing tons of light into the space.
Last, we pushed the refrigerator to the back wall next to the pantry. This left enough room for a large, paneled refrigerator.
